Veronica Agwunobi was brought up in Edinburgh Scotland, where her interest in art was nurtured within the Art galleries and the local museums developing her interest in design, colour and patterns throughout her childhood years and studying stained glass windows with ceramic glaze use, under her teacher Felix Mc Cullough a famous Edinburgh church window-stained glass artist.
After leaving school she became a pottery decorator working for a year in the renowned Buchan Thistle Potteries in Portobello Edinburgh, before attending Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, Scotland to do a course in Art and Design with pottery and sculpture included.
Marrying her Nigerian husband in the early 60’s and starting a family, meant her art and design course was cut short. Eventually Veronica and her family went to live and work in Nigeria, continuing to paint pictures, crochet colourful patterned blankets, designing terrazzo floors, and decorate tables using whatever mediums were available to her. She developed an interest in the local art and culture and was influenced by African Art, with their wonderful use of colour and design. This influence is still seen today in most of her art pieces with her strong bold use of colour, shapes and movement involving geometric shapes designed into this movement and is seen in her head pieces. She held an exhibition showing several pieces of her art whilst in Jos, and after spending 20 years in Nigeria, she returned to London painting many pieces for her own pleasure, designing on wood furniture such as her sets of nesting tables and grandfather clock. She attended a pottery workshop retreat in Greece in 2022, developing her skills to make large pottery pieces.
Several pieces of her art are presently being exhibited in ‘Papa L’s Kitchen’ at 16-17 Jermyn Street, near Piccadilly Circus in London (https://papalskitchen.com). She is also a member of the ‘SE20’ Art-Group, a group of artists around Southeast London.
